The Phenomenon of the Overactive Root Chakra: A New Path to Root Chakra Healing

A New Pathway Toward Root Chakra Healing

Have you ever felt like no matter how much you do, it’s never enough to finally feel safe?

Like your nervous system is always on alert, scanning for the next thing that could go wrong?

You’re not alone—and you’re not broken.

Right now, something deeper is stirring in the collective. The energy in the root chakra has shifted. What used to show up as disconnection and floating away from the body is now emerging as gripping control, obsessive planning, and fear masquerading as productivity.

We’re living through a massive root chakra activation—not just individually, but collectively. Our sense of safety, stability, and trust is being tested like never before. And it’s not just about what’s happening “out there.” It’s about what’s rising to the surface within us.

So what if this moment isn’t just a breakdown—but an initiation?

In this post, I’ll share a new pathway toward healing—not by fixing or doing more, but by reconnecting with something far more powerful: your joy, your body, your truth.

If you’re feeling stuck in survival mode, I invite you to slow down, soften, and come with me. There is another way to root.

Why Root Chakra Healing Matters Right Now

Up until recently, the most common state of an unbalanced root chakra I observed in my practice was a deficient or underactive root. Since the root chakra governs grounding, this pattern reflects energy being cut off or disconnected from the earth. This disconnection sends energy upward to the upper chakras, creating excess there, which often manifests as overthinking, anxiety, and an obsession with the spiritual realm.

But something shifted at the start of 2025. And I’m not just seeing it in my clients—I’m feeling it in myself and noticing it in the collective.

Now, more than ever, I’m observing a rise in overactive root chakras. It’s not that people suddenly feel more grounded. Quite the opposite. The same disconnection is there, but it’s flipped. Instead of floating above the body, we’re gripping to the material world. People are obsessing over finances, fixating on security, micromanaging every detail of their lives. It’s survival mode in disguise—dressed up as discipline, responsibility, or “being prepared.”

This isn’t just individual—it’s energetic. The collective root chakra is pulsing with fear, tension, and a desperate need for control.

And that’s exactly why I’m talking about root chakra healing right now.

We’re in a time where external instability—economic uncertainty, political unrest, climate anxiety—is shaking the very ground we stand on. It’s activating our most primal fears: Am I safe? Will I survive? Can I trust anyone?

Our deepest safety wounds are being triggered. These aren’t new—they’re ancient. They’re rooted in generational trauma, societal conditioning, and systemic beliefs we’ve inherited without consent. And while this reckoning is uncomfortable, it’s also a portal. We’re being called to finally feel what we’ve been avoiding. To look at what’s been buried. To create a new foundation—not from fear, but from truth.

This is the real work of the root chakra.

Not just survival—but belonging. Not just safety—but sovereignty.

What Does an Overactive Root Chakra Look Like?

Let’s begin with what this looks like in real life.

For spiritually curious individuals (often in creative, healing, or progressive fields) who value authenticity and reject rigid societal norms, the root chakra’s balance is what allows them to feel safe being true to themselves while navigating an unconventional path.

An overactive root chakra floods you with survival energy—resulting in excessive worry, rigidity, or aggression that can seep into thoughts, emotions, habits, and even your body.

Common Symptoms of Root Chakra Imbalance

  • Chronic fear and anxiety
  • Hypervigilance, a constant sense that something bad is about to happen
  • Obsessive thinking and a scarcity mindset
  • Constant financial worry, even with a stable income
  • Worst-case scenario thinking
  • Difficulty letting go, fear of change, and mistrust in others or the universe
  • Clinging to routines, relationships, or possessions
  • Feeling stuck or overly controlling
  • Possessiveness, jealousy, or anxious attachment styles

These patterns don’t just live in the mind—they shape your entire way of being.

Behavioral Signs of an Overactive Root Chakra

You might notice yourself:

  • Micromanaging aspects of your day or others
  • Rigidly organizing your schedule, reacting strongly when plans change
  • Staying constantly busy, driven by a fear of falling behind or failing
  • Working long hours or juggling too many projects—not purely out of passion, but to ensure survival
  • Caught in cycles of procrastination from anxiety and overwhelm
  • Hoarding or stockpiling items “just in case” or finding it hard to let go of material possessions
  • Saying yes to stable but misaligned work purely for safety
  • Becoming overly fixed in routines and rituals that feel like lifelines
  • Rationalizing fear-based decisions as “being responsible”

This might be the therapist seeing clients back-to-back without breaks, the activist who never takes a day off, or the entrepreneur who’s unable to rest. Among socially conscious people, this pattern often hides under productivity and devotion to purpose.

Root chakra imbalance can also appear as both clinging and hyper-independence. One person might over-rely on loved ones out of fear, needing constant reassurance. Another might reject support completely, saying “I can do it myself,” because trusting others feels unsafe. Both responses come from the same root fear: that you’re not secure unless you’re in total control.

How Root Chakra Imbalance Feels in the Body

The effects of an overactive root chakra aren’t just emotional or mental—they’re deeply physical. Because the root chakra governs survival, these imbalances are felt viscerally in the nervous system and body.

When this root energy is overcharged, the nervous system is stuck in survival mode—and your body lets you know. These are not random symptoms; they are messages that your root chakra needs attention.

Physical and Somatic Symptoms of Root Chakra Imbalance

  • Restlessness and Tension: Fidgeting, bouncing legs, jaw or muscle clenching, especially in the hips, lower back, or legs.
  • Sleep Disruption: Racing thoughts, trouble falling or staying asleep, vivid stress dreams, and waking unrested.
  • Digestive and Elimination Issues: Constipation, IBS, stomach knots, or weight fluctuation.
  • Fatigue and Adrenal Burnout: “Tired but wired.” Chronic stress depletes energy reserves.
  • Lower Body Discomfort: Chronic issues in knees, feet, or lower back.
  • Sensory Overload: Easily startled, overwhelmed in crowded or noisy places.
  • Menstrual Irregularities: Changes in cycle length, heavier or more painful periods, or increased PMS symptoms
  • Pelvic Tension: Chronic pelvic floor tightness or discomfort
  • Reproductive Issues: Changes in reproductive health, hormonal fluctuations, and intimacy-related stress symptoms connected to chronic tension

A Personal Story of Root Chakra Overactivity

Sometimes, the best way to recognize this pattern is to see it in yourself. I know this all too well.

Right now, I’m in this cycle. I’m dealing with high levels of financial worry and a constant drive to plan and organize every part of my day. I feel overwhelmed and upset when things don’t go according to plan. I catch myself constantly busy, struggling to relax, trying to create order in a world that feels unstable. I know I’m lighting the candle at both ends—and even as I teach about healing, I’m practicing what I preach in real-time.

The Survival-Joy Cycle and Root Chakra Healing

Recognizing these patterns within ourselves is an important first step, but understanding how to shift out of them requires a different kind of awareness and practice. Learning to interrupt these deeply ingrained survival responses takes patience, dedication, and a willingness to explore new territory.

That’s where joy enters the picture—not as a frivolous escape or temporary distraction, but as a profound and transformative medicine for the soul. Joy serves as an essential catalyst in root chakra healing, acting as a bridge between our protective mechanisms and our natural state of being. However, when we’re caught in survival mode, experiencing joy can feel not only like an unaffordable luxury, but sometimes even dangerous. Our nervous system, trained to stay vigilant and alert, automatically suppresses feelings of pleasure and expansion when it perceives potential threats in our environment.

As this cycle continues, the prolonged absence of joy creates what we might call a spiritual dehydration—a deep thirsting of the soul. Like a garden left untended, our capacity for spontaneity, creativity, and genuine connection begins to wither. We gradually lose touch with the essential parts of ourselves that know how to play, create, and connect authentically with others.

The journey from survival consciousness to joyful presence isn’t about making one dramatic transformation. Rather, it’s about crossing a threshold—a sacred doorway—that we learn to step through again and again. This crossing happens through countless small moments, through gentle and repeated invitations to feel just safe enough to open, to soften, to trust in the present moment.

How Root Chakra Imbalance Impacts the Sacral Chakra

It’s important to understand that root chakra imbalance creates ripples throughout your entire energetic system. Each chakra responds and adapts to maintain balance, but this adaptation can create new patterns of tension and release.

The sacral chakra, situated just above the root, demonstrates this delicate dance most clearly. While an overactive root chakra grips tightly to control and security, the sacral chakra yearns for its natural state of fluidity, creative expression, and sensual pleasure. This creates an internal tug-of-war: the root chakra’s desperate cry of “Control everything to ensure survival” clashes with the sacral chakra’s gentle whisper of “Trust in life’s natural ebb and flow, surrender to the moment.”

When we begin to loosen our grip on control, even in the smallest ways, something magical happens. We start to rediscover our embodied wisdom, reconnecting with the deep currents of joy that have always flowed beneath the surface of our being.

Joy as Medicine: A Pottery Practice Story

Let me share a transformative moment that brought me back to myself – a gentle reminder of what it means to truly inhabit the present moment.

Recently, I found myself drawn to book a spontaneous pottery class. There was no elaborate plan or strategic purpose – just a pure, uncomplicated desire to create something with my hands. As I sat at the wheel, the cool, responsive clay beneath my fingers became an anchor to the present moment. The simple, repetitive motions of shaping and molding were surprisingly effortless. The process didn’t demand perfection or achievement – it simply invited presence. For those precious hours, my usually racing mind grew quiet. The endless to-do lists, future worries, and constant pressure to prove my worth all melted away. In their place, I discovered a profound sense of peace. I wasn’t trying to be anything or anyone – I was simply there, fully immersed in the gentle rhythm of creation. In that space of pure being, I remembered what it felt like to exist without the weight of constant doing.

That’s the transformative power of joy – it gently guides your body back to its natural state of being, reminding you that you’ve been home all along.

What’s the Antidote to Root Chakra Overactivity?

So when we find ourselves caught in the grip of survival mode, what paths can we take toward healing and wholeness? How do we begin to loosen the tight hold of fear and control?

The answer might surprise you. The antidote isn’t found in more hustle, in endless self-improvement projects, or in trying to fix what isn’t broken. Instead, it lies in the gentle art of remembering—returning to the wisdom that has always lived within you.

This remembering is about reconnecting with your body’s inherent wisdom, recognizing that your intuition isn’t a skill to be mastered or a prize to be earned—it’s your birthright, a sacred knowing that has been with you since the beginning. Your inner guidance system was never lost; it was simply waiting to be acknowledged.

True healing blossoms when we finally stop searching for answers in systems and structures that were designed to keep us disconnected from our essential nature. When we dare to turn inward—toward the quiet wisdom of our bodies, the steady rhythm of our breath, the subtle whispers of our inner knowing—we begin to rebuild the bridge of trust with ourselves. This return to self-trust is both a journey and a homecoming.

Trust and joy aren’t just nice additions to root chakra healing—they’re fundamental pillars of the process. The path forward involves carefully rebuilding trust in our inherent safety, learning to feel secure within the sanctuary of our own being rather than constantly seeking validation from external circumstances. This profound work includes developing a deeper relationship with our intuition, establishing clear and loving boundaries, and consciously choosing to nurture relationships that feed our souls rather than depleting our energy.

Remember this truth: You don’t have to wait until everything feels perfectly safe to begin this journey. You can start exactly where you are, in this very moment, with one conscious breath, one mindful step, one gentle act of self-trust at a time.
