How to Care for Others and Avoid Burnout

Your energy, your life force, your power is one of the most valuable resources you have. With it, you have vitality, wellness, peace, and liberation. Without it, you’ll be depleted, sick, in pain, emotionally unstable, limited.

I’ve worked with many folks who care deeply about others. You care about your families, your partners, your friends, and your exes. You care about the world and are advocates for the things you’re passionate about. You want to make a difference and be a catalyst for change.

But one of the biggest mistakes we make in caring for others is using our own energy to help others. We take responsibility for the healing of others. We do everything we can control to get them better or make them change.

Depleting your energy reserves to care for others is unsustainable and an invitation for burnout.

Personally, learning Reiki was essential for my learning not to use my own energy for the healing of others.

In Reiki, there are a few foundational principles that help us to fill up our energy stores and keep them full. You can utilize these principles to help yourself care for others without depleting yourself.

Always ask for permission. In order to help someone we must ask for permission. We can not help someone who does not desire to receive it. Forcing our care on others is a form of energetic assault. It doesn’t matter if it is in the form of sending healing energy or taking action on their behalf. Helping someone without their consent is a violation of consent. This will 100% of the time result in the depletion of your energy. It can also cause your intentions to backfire and cause more harm than good.

Never use your own energy for the healing of others. In Reiki, we never use our own energy for the healing of others. We are always channeling life force energy from the connection of the divine. This means that we allow ourselves to receive Reiki energy and then send it to others. When we send Reiki healing, we are at the same time receiving healing ourselves.

Detach from the outcome. One of the major causes of suffering in our caring for others is our attachment to the outcome. When you are attached to the outcome of your caring you are in a state of control. Controlling outcomes depletes your power. What is meant for someone has nothing to do with you. Let it go and let it be.

Healing energy always goes where it needs to go. When we care for others and they allow us to do so, we don’t know the effect it will have. When you trust that what you give is exactly what needs to be received, you allow miracles to happen. The transformations that can be made when we trust something greater than ourselves are so powerful.

All healing starts from within, you become a healer through healing yourself. The effect you have on the world really comes from the healing you do for yourself. The changes you make within yourself create a ripple effect within the world. As your vibration changes, you naturally shift the energy that surrounds you. Without ever having to do anything for anyone else. The best thing you can do to be a catalyst for change is to heal yourself.

How will you take these principles into your life and apply them?
